First thoughts after watching Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 16

This note includes a spoiler, and not only about this episode.

I watched Re:Zero season 4 episode 16 twice.

So, this episode was pretty simple. Subaru saw his past memories from when he came to Lugunica onward, and then met himself in the Corridor of Memories. Because he had already died 15 times in the tower, it made sense that he thought the original Subaru had something special that other isekai protagonists would have in their isekai world. But he was disappointed that the original Subaru didn't. And he watched those dozens of return-by-death memories one after another, and it hit him hard. Of course, it would drive anyone insane if you could feel the pain and watch the memories.

The scene between Subaru and the other Subaru was great. Up to this episode, the Subaru in the tower was, actually, literally "Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World," because he didn't remember a thing. And even so, he cared about everyone and thanked everyone. It was a great scene — he thought he would disappear, and he still showed his appreciation. He also thought only the original Subaru could overcome the situation, because he had already failed 15 times and relied upon his assumption that the original Subaru had a special power. Also, it was great that they argued about who Rem belonged to, even if it sounded weird. But Rem said so herself, that she was Subaru's, so he took her at her word; still, it was kinda funny that neither of them would let the other Subaru have her. The voice actor of Subaru was also good. In most of his lines, when the original Subaru spoke, his voice sounded mature and strong, while the other Subaru's voice sounded like a kid when he was calm, or just angry when he got pissed off.

And he finally got back to his original self with his memories. It turned out Gluttony, Rui Arneb, got back from the other Subaru. So, the other Subaru moved around with his own memories, but once he disappeared in the Corridor of Memories, it was back to Rui. And that had been the plan from the beginning — how they were going to get the memories and authority of Subaru. However, she didn't want to take Subaru's experiences of death, and didn't want to share them with her other self. Her other self thought she was monopolizing it for some reason and they started fighting each other. Well, I guess they'll kill each other rather than share these memories, and both end up dead? Anyhow, Subaru knew the essence of Gluttony, who wouldn't accept anything painful or unpleasant, and always wanted to get something good or pleasant from others. He didn't even have any hard feelings toward her, though, despite what she did to him.

Anyhow, then the next episode will be at the tower and they'll start fighting the enemies one by one. It seems Emilia's memory had already been lost, so it was actually the right move to fight at the tower instead of trying to save it.

  • I liked that he's a guy without any special power. Well, technically, he definitely has something, but it's not as powerful as what others have.
  • I liked the scene where the two Subarus talk.

  • Is this the last time we'll see this Gluttony? Anyway, she was a person who just trapped Subaru and ended up killing herself.
