First thoughts after watching Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 15

This note includes a spoiler, and not only about this episode.

I watched Re:Zero season 4 episode 15 twice. I didn't see this coming.

What was impressive was that Subaru counted his deaths and kept retrying like 15 times. And there were so many attempts he made, but almost everything was aimed at killing him. And he ended up unable to move his legs out of fear, because after so many attempts, he knew he would die whichever route he tried next.

For example, Reid Astrea. Picking up from the last episode, Julius explained to him that he was the Gluttony, Roy. And then, Julius said that Reid was eaten but took over Roy's body. I was wondering how he had come down during a few of Subaru's return-by-death loops, but now this is explained. As expected, he defeated Subaru and the others easily. There wasn't even a fight scene animated. Afterward Satella came and the tower started falling apart, but even during that, he still moved and fought Julius and Subaru and killed them. He even cut through Satella's magic, probably with Julius's sword. During the tower's collapse, the animation was great because, well, you know it's hard to picture a situation like that in a fantasy world. Also, in one of Subaru's attempts, he was trying to reach Reid and Reid was already with Roy. And then Subaru saw how Reid took over Roy, but it was a scary scene, and Reid was a monster.

In another of Subaru's attempts, he met Shaula. She was always positive and high-spirited, but it hit me that she missed her master a lot and she didn't want Subaru to leave after only a few days. She told them the 4 rules of the trials but there was another secret. And the secret one was not to break an exam, and that was the one Reid actually did and triggered her change into her scorpion form. I feel the drawings and animation for her in this episode were good, and the part where they fell from the balcony was especially well-drawn and beautiful. I'd already seen one cut on YouTube, but I didn't know how they ended up. Anyhow, after watching this episode twice, I thought she was the main heroine of this arc, or at least for this Subaru. She hasn't been saved and she's confined to the tower, so he is going to free her somehow. Come to think of it, who was her master, really? The person who had the witch's curse, too, 400 years ago?

After so many attempts, at the end of this episode, Subaru couldn't move but he could see 2 lights in his authority. I was wondering what they were, but because their colors were the same, it meant they were both Subaru. And he reached the place, and it was the book of Subaru Natsuki in the archive. When I saw that, I thought the archive was perhaps only books taken by Gluttony, but that's very likely not it, because it doesn't explain Meili's case. So, the archive held not only the dead, but also people who had lost their memories.

The next episode is obviously about Subaru's memory. Will he remember his own memories? I bet. Also, his return point itself might move further back, which has never happened before. I don't know what else he could do to overcome this situation — or maybe he will gain another authority, because he got it when he came back from Reid's book.

    • I liked his mindset — he wouldn't give up despite so many deaths, and yet he is still full of emotions

    • Well, it's kinda obvious, but she was a sad character. She waited alone for someone for 400 years and couldn't get out of there, and she can even be turned into a mabeast by what other people do.
    • In this arc, she is the main heroine. And I think she showed her true self in this episode and was still nuts about her master. Dedicated person.
  • Reid: 8/10
    • I like this kind of strong villain who isn't actually on anyone's side.
