First thoughts after watching Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 14

This note includes a spoiler, and not only about this episode.

I watched Re:Zero season 4 episode 14 twice. I didn't expect that ending.

So, in this episode, I was able to understand a lot of things. First of all, if Subaru, Ram, and Beatrice rushed to Emilia's place, Shaula turned into a scorpion. Why did that happen to her? It was probably a spell her master cast on her in the past, one that would turn her into a mabeast if she went outside of the tower, in order to stop her from abandoning the tower. So I bet while she was protecting the tower on the balcony, something pushed her and she became the mabeast.

Then Subaru got a new authority, which let him see the colors of some characters' souls, and see where they were, I guess. For some reason, the souls he could recognize were the ones close to him — Ram, Rem, Patrasche, Shaula, Foxidna, and so on — but he couldn't recognize others like Gluttony, a lot of mabeasts, or Reid. Why did he get this authority now? I have no idea. And he got it right before Shaula's scorpion appeared, and before the witch did. And why did the witch come here? I have no idea. It's probably related to why Shaula fell. And Subaru didn't remember what happened after the witch came, which implied to me that he became the Archbishop again at that time, and died.

Then Gluttony was able to take Emilia's name if they got to her place too late. And also, if they didn't stop Reid, he met up with Gluttony too, and the battle turned into chaos. When it comes to Gluttony, he used a few techniques and he also spoke in a few ways. It was obviously because he ate a lot of people's memories and gained their experience. He didn't share his memories with the Gluttony in the book, though, because he thought Subaru still had his memories. It was funny to see when he was trying to imitate Rem's behavior, honestly. The voice actor did his best with that. It was patently clear that Ram was furious with Gluttony too, because her memories of Rem had been taken by him. His authority showed some weaknesses when Ram lost her memories of Emilia, because her memories no longer added up when she lost her memories of both Rem and Emilia. Then the cliffhanger at the end was that Reid Astrea was one of the Gluttonies. This was the most surprising thing to me in this episode and I even let out a noise at the end on my first watch. I was wondering why he didn't help defeat Gluttony, or why Gluttony came into the tower in the first place, but this made it clear. Also, when I watched it the second time, I noticed he hadn't lost his memories of Emilia, and also Subaru couldn't recognize his soul at all, so I should've been able to figure it out. But then, why did he beat the other Gluttony up that badly? Anyhow, this explained why there was a Gluttony in his book in the archive.

This episode's subtitle was "Five Obstacles". What are they? At least from what I've seen, there are a few candidates.

  1. Mabeasts from the sand dunes
  2. Gluttony 1st
  3. Shaula's scorpion
  4. The Witch
  5. Reid Astrea
  6. Subaru turning into an Archbishop

And then, I believe another Archbishop who pushed Subaru with Rem's voice was there, too. But this may not count because it's not something Subaru has seen so far and maybe just how the animation was done. I think these have to be overcome in this arc. I think at least, this arc will end the battle against Gluttony, and may solve some of the issues they currently have, like Rem, Julius, and Subaru. This should also show how Subaru can overcome a crazy strong enemy, a Sword Saint like Reinhard. I don't know what will happen with Anastasia's problem, though.

    • His new authority, and the way he handled the situation, were good
  • Emilia: 7/10
    • She was an independent and emotional person so she was overjoyed when Subaru remembered her though her name had been taken.
  • Ram: 8/10
    • Her joke was good, especially the one about Emilia in this episode, that Emilia has only a few good points, and one of them is her face.
    • Her kindness made her very angry at Gluttony.
  • Gluttony (Lye Batenkaitos): 5/10
  • Reid Astrea: 6/10
    • The voice actor is good. But why was he a Gluttony?
