First thoughts after watching I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class Episode 9
This note includes a spoiler.
I watched I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class episode 9. 7/10. This episode included
- Maki was accepted to join the Christmas party
- Maki talked with his mother about the truth about their living expenses
- Maki visited Umi's house
The main part of this episode was how Maki reacted to seeing Umi's family while they had a normal conversation like a family does, and that reminded Maki of his family's past Maki's past with his family was short, simple, but still sad enough for a character of a slice-of-life anime. And his reaction was quiet, but he couldn't stop crying — exactly like his character, who cared about others and who didn't attack or blame others. And Umi was, well, maybe the ideal girl who chased him regardless of whether he ran away or not, and calmed him down and stayed with him. It was well drawn that she thanked him in earlier episodes that he meant a lot to her, and also, Maki didn't recognize it. From Maki's perspective, she was the first friend who was nice to him and got along with him, so probably he thought it was nothing special. Now, come to think of it, he didn't have any friends because he moved schools from time to time, so his family was everything to him, and I can imagine the divorce of his parents hurt a lot.
The other parts are minor. Early in this episode, Amami was unwilling to see Umi's brother, but this episode didn't show how creepy his behavior was. Only Umi described what his behavior was like. Umi's father was very tall, a head taller than Maki, but like Maki, he was kind, and Umi's mother always led the conversation. It wasn't such a shock that Maki's mother didn't say anything about the living expenses she was trying to earn without using the money she got from Maki's father. I still don't exactly know what happened between them, but she might be kinda stubborn, or hasn't forgiven what he did. In the scene where Umi caught Maki after he ran away, the background was someone's house decorated cleanly and brightly for Christmas, so that brightness and beauty made it clear they were moving forward in a good way. Before he ran away, it was a plain street without good lighting, so at that time, it showed how depressed Maki was.
There were a few things wrong about the nitty-gritty. Maki started running away and Umi was trying to catch up. But they were just eating dinner and went out suddenly, so running in such a condition should hurt them and it was hard to run. They were emotional and they didn't care about that, though. Also, when Umi was trying to make Maki sleep in her lap, the camera was from Maki's eyeline. But it looked at Umi, though he was obviously looking in a different direction, so I wanted the previous cut to be consistent.
Well, anyway, what I wanted to say was they were a match made in heaven, even compared to any other anime. I don't know what Maki will do in the next episode, but he'll probably invite his parents to the school's Christmas party and try to get them to work out their arguments. And they would start living together, but I guess it won't happen.
