Random thoughts after re-watching Saga of Tanya the Evil episode 8
This note includes a spoiler.
I watched the Saga of Tanya the Evil season 1 episode 8. I watched this series a long time ago, and I liked it, but I forgot most of the story, so before the season 2, I decided to watch again.
There was a rebellion in the Arcane City and Republic also joined, and the 203rd battalion must invade the city. So unlike previous 2 episodes, the enemy wasn't weak nor was the attack a surprise. When they attack with a common sense, it was going to be rough because the battlefield will be in a city, and there were civilians in the battlefield. Besides, republic soldiers were there. Tanya was ordered to eliminate the Republic and the rebel from an upper commander but he also wondered why people wanted to become soldiers. The thing was, theoretically speaking, under the international law, anyone who remained in the city after the fight was declared counted as a Republican soldier, which sounds merciless.
Then Tanya went to the city and got snipers. They were split and also prepared to fight with artillery, snipers, and mages. Mages were also dexterous and were able to protect attacks from Tanya's battalion. But Tanya was able to push them back to disable artillery as well. Then she declared the surrender and release their custody of the Empire soldiers. They didn't accept and even shot someone who tried to flee from the rebel. Visha took the picture, and the HQ decided to take down the entire town, so the entire town burned down and killed civilians, too, mercilessly. They saved their soldiers, though.
Then the first lieutenant was trying to stop Tanya when she was trying to shoot artillery with fleeing civilians, but she attacked him and in the end, she ordered him to shoot them down. He saw one kid with vengeance and he was trying to leave the city, and made up his mind and shot them. That was really, the Tanya the Devil.
After this way, there was a talk between Zettour and Rerugen. And the point was, the basics of this strategy, and the hole of the law, was found out and proposed by Tanya and Zettour decided to pick her brain for the Empire. This man is really a mastermind of the Empire, for sure.
Watched again.
So I overlooked it, but the Arcane city was originally in the Republic, so there were many civilians who were originally from the Republic, and that's the reason why the Republic's commander Bouttene? tried to escape them.
This story showed each character well, the main point of view was second lieutenant Grantz. He seemed to enjoy the war in the Rhine on the early episode, and tried to earn his stripes somehow, probably by the number of soldiers he eliminated. However, right after he heard from the Tanya for the Arcane, he started bothering and said his words aloud, then afterward, he even tried to disobey Tanya. So if this was not a war, he would be a positive, outward, sociable, and great man. On the other hand, the first lieutenant Weiss was the person who always warned Grantz to be careful and ask to follow orders. He looked he was a good soldier, but he got a shot and needed to leave the battlefield. Tanya looked through him that he was hesitant to shoot enemies in the city because he was thinking too much. So, he was a person who thought a lot, looked around and took care of others, but didn't show that if it's an order usually. Visha, however, seemed not to struggle. This woman was scary to Tanya for sure, but other than, she was kinda non-emotional in a war. She obviously knew what was going to happen, but she recorded when the Empire's custody soldier fled to the Command, and the command to wipe out the city started, and she didn't change her face a little. Or maybe she followed Tanya too much. However, the normal soldiers shooting by artillery guns had the strongest mind because they knew what would happen and still fired because it was from an upper order.
Tanya obviously knew, that the command was the one she originally proposed and top brass took that proposal and used it. So maybe she was happy not to take reckless operations and didn't have to risk her life, and also that was efficient from her perspective. However, could the 203rd battalion catch up with her? I kinda felt they will eventually betray her, or at least some of them and there are plenty of reasons to do. Well, that's more like how much Tanya could earn trust points from her subordinates so they thought she can be trusted.
